Gabe’s Guide to Budget Travel

Excerpt from “Gabe’s Guide to Budget Travel”:

India is truly the land of extremes. If you go there, you will likely find it to be one of the most rewarding places you will ever travel to, as well as one of the most challenging. And depending on where you end up, you may experience more of the challenging aspects of this very different part of the world, rather than the rewards.

My best advice regarding India is to avoid the big cities as much as possible; unless you happen to enjoy congestion, garbage, pollution, crowds, noise, hawkers, hustlers, scams, more expensive lodging, etc. Although the Taj Mahal is certainly a must-see, and it’s always a part of getting to know a country to experience its capital city or other major metropolitan areas, the downsides far outweigh the upsides in my opinion. Sure, go to the Taj Mahal, spend a day or two in Delhi or Mumbai.

But I highly recommend not planning your trip to India around hopping from one big city to another. The best places in India, in my own subjective opinion, are the small towns and villages and out-of-the-way spots, many of which I will detail below (in “Gabe’s Guide to Budget Travel”). And even when it comes to interesting attractions, most of the best ones aren’t located in the big cities.
